There coming at you in a heat race at an early spring afternoon outlaw sprint race at the the Big Tulsa Fairgrounds Speedway in 77. Taken from the grandstands. Here's one photo from the race I was referring to. Rick Ferkel on the bottom in the yellow one. The light blue one on the top was Bobby Marshall #19. The same car as above 1st row center. Before the WoO came to be official, I hear that there were 2 shows done to see if the formula actually worked. One of those shows was in Alabama and Shane Carson found the hat trick that day. I wonder if this shot was from that time?

I guess he dropped it in favor of the "newer" car he built in '80. Man has he had a lot of good rides over the years.

From Tulsa's 1st World of Outlaws show in 1977. This error is unforgivable. The forst year of the World of Outlaws was 78. The only two times the Outlaws were at the Fairgrounds in Tualsa were 79 and 81. Both were wing shows. There was a non sanctioned outlaw show but not a WoO show in Derwey, Ok. It was a non wing show. The two shows in Tulsa were as follows. The 79 show was a two day. It was rained out on Friday and run on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The 81 show was a Saturday night show. Since The 79 show was run in March, a day show, and cool and windy, the primitiveness of the cars along with the jackets makes me think it was a day show. Johnny Suggs was in the Black 77. Ed French had #7777. Both were from Texas. At the tiime The top three drivers in points were Wolfgang, Kinser, and Ferkel. They were tied, I think. Wolfgang won the show in the Vicegrips car. Some other info; Shane Carson drove Leonard McCarl's car. That is Terry's dad. Sammy was in the Federal Express 91. Ray Crawford drove the John Kalb Fireston 721 Stanton that Shuman had driven in Florida. Supposedly Gary Stanton had so many car orders backlogged that he didn't have a car for Shuman, his driver, to take to Florida. One of the few other real highlights that I remember is when Kinser Timed in. He was the first person to ever run the big 5/8's without lifting. A lot of people thought they had gotten their money's worth just seeing that. I know it wasn't as safe back then but racing was so muh better when guys could put a car on the track for 10 grand and it really was run what you brung. | |||||||||||||

Update. The Dewey show may have been in 76. I remember Shane ran 2nd to Ferkel. I wasn't living in Tulsa in early 77 and obviously missed the non wing show. It's sad, I was working in Edmond and living in Okc and didn't even know they ran the track that year. About the only way to tell the year is to match the sponsor's name and the driver. Trostle at that time had made the statement that he had had over 100 drivers in his cars. Talk about a revolving door. In 78, Shane drove for him and in 79 he put Wolfie back in the car and Shane drove for CK Spurlock. Then he bounced around and the week before Memorial Day, Trostle and Wolfgang split and Shane was back in the ride. I think it was at Belleville, Ks. Damn, I'm getting old. | |||||||||||||

This photo of Ron was taken at one of those WoO races78, 79 or 80. Some of the others on the sprints of the 60's and 70's were taken at the same time I believe. Steve Kinser did not have very good luck at the big Tulsa track. In 1979 he blew up and the car caught fire and his feet and legs were burnt, apparently it was not very serious but he went to the burn center at Hillcrest Hospital. In 1981 at the start of the featue going down the back straight he started flipping and wound up on the wall in turn 3. That was about the highest that I ever saw a car get. The pictures wee in Open Wheel Magazine. That car was demolished and Karl did not have a spare and Steve Drove the Stanton car the next night in KC. I don't remember who won the featue in 1979, Sammy Swindell in the Nance car won in 1981. Ray | |||||||||||||

You're mostly right, Wolfgang and Trostle split in '78 AT Belleville. Trostle was having engine problems and Wolfie wasn't happy. Wolfgang arrived at Belleville to find Shane in the car. In the feature, the RF hub broke going into turn 3 and Shane took one of the hardest rides I've probably seen to this day. I remember when the wrecker picked the car up by the cage it nearly came off. I spent most of the night at the Belleville Hospital with Shane that night, he really took a pounding. Update....The Tulsa pics I have are dated March 25, 1979, a daytime, WoO, wing show. I'll get some uploaded as time allows. The pics posted above, dated 1977 are probabaly the right date. I have some of Bobby Marshall in that same light blue car I took at the '77 Spring Nationals at Devil's Bowl, so I'm thinking the date is correct. The first car is #5 Con Edwards, Ankeny, IA, driving what was the very first Jensen Const. car, which would evenntually become the #55, made famous by Tim Green and Jeff Swindell. I don't recall who was in the Nance car that day, (Terry Gray??), but things didn't go too well.

The #4 isn't the Don Mack sprinter from ND. I believe at one of the Tulsa WoO shows an Ohio driver was in the 1n. Fred Linder or someone of his caliber comes to mind?
